World Ozone Day - Sep 16, 2017
World Ozone Day program was organised jointly by IMS Ahmedabad chapter (IMSA) and GUJCOST, Gujarat Government at Science City, Ahmedabad on September 16, 2016. It was attended by more than 150 students and teachers along with members of IMSA and Science City Ahmedabad. Secretary – IMSA, Dr. D. Ram Rajak briefed the audience about the objectives of IMSA. Dr. Som Kumar Sharma, Vice-Chairman IMSA explained the importance of Ozone to all life under the Sun and introduced the speaker of the event, Prof. S. Ramachandran from Physical Research Laboratory (PRL). Prof Ramachandran has worked extensively on the measurements of aerosol properties using state-of-the-art techniques as well as modeling their impacts on radiation budget, atmospheric temperature and climate using radiative transfer and general circulation/global climate models. His principal research interests are measurements and modeling of aerosols in the troposphere and lower stratosphere, and their radiative impacts. His current research projects address aerosol composition, aerosol-cloud interactions, and the role of black carbon aerosol in climate. He is a recipient of many international and national awards for his scientific research. Dr. Ramachandran explained various aspect of ozone layer, ultraviolet rays, importance of ozone to the life on our planet, good ozone vs bad ozone, the Antarctic Ozone hole, Montreal Protocol, our responsibilities toward protection of the environment etc. He interacted with the audience and explained these complex things in very simple English and Hindi languages. Many students asked a number of questions which were answered by him. Dr. R. P. Singh, an IMSA member also explained the importance of preserving natural environment for well-being of human lives. Students clarified their queries related to Ozone Hole, Global Warming, Remote Sensing of Environment, Sensors on board Satellites etc. Dr. Singh explained the facts in very simple Hindi language so that the students could grasp them easily. Glimpses of the WOD2017 lecture are presented in the following photographs.
